African American Mental Health Status

1 in 5 Americans, including African Americans are coping with a mental health issue.  Primary psychological disorders among adults include Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia.
African Americans are 50% less likely to seek treatment as compared with Caucasian Americans.
Due to delayed treatment, African Americans cope with more severe symptoms.
Rates of suicide have increased to historic levels among African American males.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth age 12 – 24.

African American Mental Health Guide

The African American Mental Health Guide is developed and presented by the Faith-Based Mental Health Initiative of Metro Atlanta.  The Guide is revolutionary!  It empowers with culturally-relevant information and resources.  It explains mental health diagnoses, provides a directory of licensed mental health professionals, contains a listing of holistic providers, and features an “author’s corner.”
The Faith-Based Mental Health Initiative is committed to improving mental health outcomes by increasing access to care and eroding stigma that prevents or delays treatment.
